The NIGHTINGALE project held its second roundtable

April 24-25, 2022

The second NIGHTINGALE roundtable took place during the 21st European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery in Oslo, Norway. ESTES hosted and organised intensive two-day discussions among end-users, medical practitioners, and supporting partners.

The second roundtable focused on two aspects. First, it is to formulate common denominators in trauma care during mass casualty incidents. Second, it is to translate the results intro user requirements that can guide technical partners in developing components of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit.

During the first day, the participants were introduced to the translation methodology, which followed a well-established approach designed to find a consensus among experts – the Delphi process. The discussion continued in smaller interactive groups, where the participants were asked to reach consensus on three aspects: what type of data is gathered and transmitted, how this data is integrated in the incident management system, and what new competencies can be integrated in emergency medical response training.

The second day included several interlinked topics. The participants reviewed overarching mass casualty scenarios and discussed the difference in risks and in emergency medical response. Afterwards, the discussion moved to identify user requirements for components of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit and to formulate clear guidelines that can be used by technical partners. The participants successfully covered all elements of the process, including triage, damage control and pre-hospitalisation, and some additional aspects, such as data gathering and storage, communication, and information exchange between civil protection agencies.

In addition to the NIGHTINGALE roundtable, the participants were welcome to attend events and the industrial exhibition during the 21st European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, which also included a presentation of the project as an example of European efforts in increasing resilience and preparedness to mass casualty scenarios.

The roundtable was a work-intensive and interactive event, which helped to advance the work on the scenarios and user requirements to the next stage. The participating partners will continue their active collaboration and finalize their contributions during the upcoming month. The next NIGHTINGALE event will take place in Novara, Italy, on the 25th-26th of May 2022.
